You can experience the wonder of Matera in the coolness of the autumn days, in calm serenity, avoiding the heat and the chaos and crowds of summer.
There are so many things to discover and experience, both within the town and in the surrounding area. Try an excursion in the Murgia Park, where you can take long walks along marked paths. Hike down to the bottom of the canyon and cross over the Tibetan bridge that connects the two sides. If that isn’t your thing, you can visit one of the town’s fascinating museums. There’s the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Palazzo Lanfranchi, where there are collections of religious works, as well as the paintings from the collection of Camillo d'Errico, or the contemporary art section where there are the works of Carlo Levi, one of Italy’s great cultural figures of the 20th century. For archeology enthusiasts there is the Domenico Ridola National Museum of Archeology.

Thanks to the legacy left by the Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019 which managed the events for the town’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2019, it is possible to visit the permanent installations of great international artists such as Giuseppe Stampone, Alfredo Pirri, Dario Carmentano, Salvatore Arancio, Filippo Riniolo, Georgina Starr , all of which were included in the Matera Alberga project.
Until November 30 It’s also possible to visit the Salvador Dalì exhibit "The Persistence of Opposites" held within the rupestrian complex of Madonna delle Virtù.
Heading out of town, there are fabulous landscapes to explore as day trips within the Matera province, including the woods of Accettura, where you can go to pick mushrooms and chestnuts.
Seasonal food is one more reason to come in the fall in order to fully enjoy the experience of discovering autumn flavors: legume soups with wild vegetables, pumpkin flan, roasted, wild cardoncelli mushrooms seasoned with sweet crunchy cruschi peppers and washed down with tasty novella wine.
